What was the catalyst that made you decide to go into business?
For years being professional media personnel, we were constantly being asked to get individuals events and stories across the media. So for several years, the team unofficially carried out public relations for friends, particularly those promoting music events as well as community groups, voluntary groups etc. In 2004 the mother and daughter duo decided to make it official and started Shiloh PR. Running the company alongside their full-time jobs working for the BBC. In 2010 the opportunity to take redundancy came along and Evadney decided to take the plunge and work full-time on the company adding Media Training to their portfolio.
What was holding you back from being an entrepreneur at the time?
Being in jobs which were relatively well paid and which we both enjoyed immensely meant we could carry out PR more as a hobby than a profession. The risk of giving up a relatively secure job and not being able to make a living was also off putting and daunting. We also thought setting up a company would cost far too much money.
What was the best business advice you were given?
Do something you are passionate about.
What is the most exciting thing happening in your sector right now?
The growth of Social Media and keeping up with all the new software and how to capitalise on them. The growth of internet media which, has allowed so many people to launch radio and television stations relatively easily and inexpensively.
What are your customers demanding more from you at the moment?
Customers are asking for various workshops but, it is obvious they are not clear precisely what they want from you and precisely how it will benefit them. This makes it extremely difficult for the company to ensure it provides the best service for each customer. Another challenge is to explain why and how PR can benefit an organisation. The way we respond is through education and evidence of success.
What social media tool are you using at the moment ?
At the moment, Shiloh PR uses, Twitter, (@shilohpr) Youtube and Instagram as well as ensuring our website is kept dynamic. To date, we have found twitter to be the most useful. We have not set up a Facebook account, as we do not think at this stage it would particularly add any value to our business. (Advice from my business partner who specialises in social media strategy for business development).
What is your take on personal business failures?
Statistics on the number of small business which fail in their first few years are not encouraging, but I believe if you plan properly, stay positive and determined, with the right support most business has a good chance of surviving. I think the problem with many small businesses which fail is the fact that they are not necessarily well thought through, lack of sufficient investment and failure to seek professional help, training and sometimes lack of a clear vision.
What is difference that is making the difference in business at the moment?
Network, attend seminars and conference with other entrepreneurs especially those, which have been and are successful in their field. Keep up with developments in their area, keep up with technology, which are useful to the development of their business and stay positive. Meet other entrepreneurs for support. Make sure your business does not become a chore by ensuring it is something you are passionate about. Keep your vision in your sight.
Who are you following on Twitter and why?
I primarily follow potential clients, competitors, media outlets and others in my field who are well established and offer advice, tips etc. I also follow professionals in my sector who are able to give information on changes in the industry etc.
What book would you recommend for entrepreneurs?
I’ve just completed reading “The Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs” by Carmine Gallo and I’m in the middle of reading “Become a Key Person of Influence” by Daniel Priestley. I’ve found both of these encouraging and I read “The Secret “which fed into my belief of the power of positive thinking.
What is your favourite quote and how are you applying this in your business?
I don’t think I have a favourite quote but I live by the belief that if you think positively and believe in your dreams, the universe will deliver. I also have strong faith and belief in God and believe that he is also providing and guiding everything we do.
What next for your business?
Our Mission is to become the No 1 Black Owned ethnic PR Company in the UK within the next five years, so it’s to work towards this goal. We want Shiloh PR to become the go to PR company if you want to reach Britain’s African and Caribbean communities.
