Unapologetic Power:

The Legacy of Angela Davis & Toni Morrison

When we talk about Black women who changed the world, we must say the names Angela Davis and Toni Morrison—two women who refused to be silenced, reshaped narratives, and paved the way for generations to come.

Angela Davis—Scholar, activist, and revolutionary. A woman who stood in the face of oppression, challenging systems of injustice with fearless determination. She became a global symbol of resistance, from her leadership in the Civil Rights and Black Power movements to her fight against the prison-industrial complex. Davis’s intellect and activism proved that resistance is not just an act—it’s a way of life. Her books, including Women, Race, and Class and Are Prisons Obsolete? remain essential readings for those seeking to understand the intersections of race, gender, and systemic oppression.

Toni Morrison—Literary genius and master storyteller. Morrison didn’t just write books—she wrote history, memory and survival into existence.…

Alexander Dumas

The Legacy of a Trailblazing Author and His Impact on Black Literature

Alexander Dumas, one of the most celebrated authors in history, is perhaps best known for his iconic works The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo. His adventurous tales have captivated readers across the globe for generations. However, what makes Dumas' legacy even more extraordinary is his complex personal background and the profound impact his works had on the African-American literary community.

Born in Villes-Cotterêts, France, Dumas was the son of Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, a general in Revolutionary France, and Marie-Louise Élisabeth Labouret. His father, of Afro-Caribbean descent, was born in what is now Haiti, and his paternal grandmother, Marie-Cessette, was a black slave in the French colony of Santo Domingo (now Haiti). This powerful connection to both French nobility and Afro-Caribbean heritage formed the foundation of Dumas' identity, which he navigated throughout his life.

Review: The American Directory of Certified Uncle Toms

(Paperback, January 1, 1999)

The American Directory of Certified Uncle Toms is a bold and provocative work that challenges readers to confront the complexities of race, identity, and assimilation in American society. Published in 1999, the book serves as both a social critique and a satirical commentary, targeting individuals and behaviours perceived to perpetuate systemic racism through compliance or betrayal of community values.

Tone and Content

The tone of the book is unapologetically sharp, direct, and, at times, deeply satirical. It uses humor, irony, and biting criticism to highlight what the author perceives as the damaging effects of individuals who align themselves with systems of oppression, often at the expense of their community. While the title alone may polarise audiences, the content dives into nuanced discussions about cultural responsibility, self-identity, and the dynamics of power within racial structures.
