Born in Villes-Cotterêts, France, Dumas was the son of Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, a general in Revolutionary France, and Marie-Louise Élisabeth Labouret. His father, of Afro-Caribbean descent, was born in what is now Haiti, and his paternal grandmother, Marie-Cessette, was a black slave in the French colony of Santo Domingo (now Haiti).
