Oprah Winfrey has undoubtedly been one of the most influential figures in the entertainment industry for decades. An inspirational TV personality, media mogul, philanthropist, and actress, Oprah has achieved impressive global fame and recognition for her work.


Her career has been marked by many milestones, including her pioneering efforts in daytime television, the success of her production company, and her philanthropic initiatives, most notably the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, which opened in 2002 with backing from former South African President Nelson Mandela.


However, the landscape of marketing and social media has evolved dramatically over the past decade, and so has Oprah's influence on it. In this article, we’ll explore Oprah's ongoing impact on marketing and social media, examine how other Black influencers have enriched her voice, and reflect on how her recent weight loss journey has empowered her message.

For Millennials, Gen Z, and anyone unfamiliar with Oprah Winfrey’s early career and her incredible journey to becoming a marketing and media mogul, here’s how Oprah’s influence transformed the industry and continues to inspire Black influencers and leaders today.


Oprah’s career began in the 1970s when she worked as a news anchor and reporter. Her first job was in Nashville, Tennessee, where she co-anchored the evening news. Later, she moved to Baltimore, where she co-anchored the evening news and hosted a local talk show called People Are Talking. It was here that Oprah began honing her signature skill—authentic connection.

In 1984, she moved to Chicago to host AM Chicago, a morning talk show that quickly became a top-rated hit. Within a year, it was renamed The Oprah Winfrey Show and began airing nationally. These dynamic voices have expanded the landscape of media and business for Black creators, adding richness and diversity to the ongoing narrative of Black excellence. Oprah’s message of self-empowerment and authenticity has been echoed and amplified by the collective voice of Black influencers who continue to rise in industries ranging from media to entrepreneurship.


In this way, Oprah’s voice today is not only her own—it is a reflection of a powerful, collective movement. Just as Oprah once turned products, books, and even political candidates into household names, influencers like Beyoncé, with her “Black Girl Magic” ethos, and Rihanna, with the global success of Fenty Beauty, are reshaping industries with the same boldness. Oprah’s influence is stronger because it resonates through these voices, continuing to inspire and shape the culture in meaningful ways.

In sharing this transformation, Oprah is offering more than just a physical change; she is, once again, empowering others to take control of their lives. Black women, in particular, have been at the forefront of challenging societal standards of beauty and body image. Oprah’s weight loss journey becomes part of a broader conversation, alongside voices like Lizzo and Gabourey Sidibe, who challenge and redefine beauty standards while advocating for health and authenticity.


Although there was a backlash, by speaking candidly about her own experiences, Oprah continues to inspire women—particularly Black women—to prioritise their health and well-being without losing their sense of self-worth.


Oprah's Influence on Product Sales

Oprah’s unique ability to connect with her audience has always been the foundation of her marketing prowess. She could take a product or a book, and with a simple mention on her show, turn it into a cultural phenomenon. This effect, often dubbed "The Oprah Effect," was legendary. From launching the careers of authors like Elizabeth Gilbert (Eat, Pray, Love) and Toni Morrison (Song of Solomon), to sparking movements with simple endorsements (like her influential support of Barack Obama and more recently, Kamala Harris), Without a doubt Oprah’s touch has had unparalleled power.


Today, we see younger Black influencers replicating and expanding on this model. Rihanna has turned Fenty Beauty into a billion-dollar brand by harnessing the power of inclusivity and social media, while Tabitha Brown’s vegan empire has grown through her authentic social media presence. Oprah’s success has paved the way for these new leaders, and though her methods may have evolved, her influence remains.


Oprah's Social Media Strategy

When it comes to social media, Oprah has been a pioneer. She was one of the first major celebrities to build a robust digital presence with Oprah.com in 1999. Her digital empire expanded to social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram, where she has millions of followers. There’s no question about it, Oprah Winfrey remains a powerful force in both marketing and social media. While her influence may no longer dominate these spaces as it did at the height of her talk show, Oprah’s legacy is stronger than ever.
