Black History Month, originally created by Carter G. Woodson in 1926, was a bold and visionary initiative to combat the invisibility of Black people in U.S. history. Woodson chose February to honour the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, but more importantly, he sought to challenge the negative stereotypes and distorted narratives that had long defined Black people in popular culture and media. By celebrating Black heroes—inventors, entertainers, leaders, and visionaries—Woodson aimed to reclaim the narrative of Black history and culture.
When Black History Month was finally adopted in the UK in October 1987, it marked a significant victory against the Eurocentric narratives that had dominated education systems. This monthly event provided a platform to rewrite history, celebrate achievements, and ensure that Black voices were heard, accurately reflected, and more importantly, celebrated.
Today, in 2024, Reclaiming Narratives has never been more relevant. From the global George Flloyd movement to the resilience of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement, Black History Month offers a crucial platform to challenge harmful stereotypes, reshape perspectives, and showcase the undeniable impact of Black excellence.
Why Reclaiming Narratives?
The theme for Black History Month 2024, Reclaiming Narratives, is not just a slogan; it’s a powerful call to action. It represents a movement to take control of our stories, celebrate our heritage, and ensure our voices are heard. This year’s theme underscores the need to correct historical inaccuracies, spotlight untold stories, and showcase the full complexity of Black heritage. It’s about honouring our heroes while challenging the narratives that have too often overlooked Black contributions and achievements both in the UK and globally.
Reclaiming Narratives invites all of us to boldly step forward, take ownership of our history, and ensure the richness of Black experiences is fully represented. It’s not about rewriting history for history’s sake, but about reclaiming the dignity, the truth, and the depth of our shared past. It Is important to remember that for too long, our stories have been filtered through the lenses of others, leaving critical parts of our history untold, uncelebrated, and often misrepresented.
This year’s theme is an opportunity to elevate those voices and experiences that have been excluded and to embrace the full narrative—one of innovation, leadership, resilience, and can we say, brilliance. It’s time to ensure that the Black experience is neither minimised nor diminished in the retelling of our history.
Why Get involved
Campaigns are adamant that Reclaiming Narratives is an open call to Black communities across the UK to step into the roles of storytellers, historians, and guardians of our heritage. This theme encourages us to shine a light on the unsung heroes and everyday individuals whose contributions have left a lasting impact. Whether you’re an artist, educator, student, or activist, now is the time to contribute to reshaping how Black history is taught, understood, and appreciated.
Sadly the education systems in the UK have historically lacked adequate representation of Black histories and contributions. This is a chance to rectify that. By reclaiming our stories, we take ownership of our narrative, ensuring that future generations are not only aware of Black struggle but also inspired by Black achievement, creativity, and leadership.
Reclaiming narratives means ensuring that when Black history is told, it’s not solely focused on oppression but on the vastness of our contributions. It’s about celebrating our brilliance in science, art, literature, business, and every other aspect of life. This theme empowers us to highlight stories of Black excellence that have shaped the world but have often been erased from mainstream discourse.
Empowering the Next Generation
This year’s theme isn’t just about reflecting on the past—it’s about empowering future generations. Imagine young people learning Black history through stories that reflect their realities, not solely through the traditional focus on slavery and civil rights. It’s about celebrating Black excellence in all its forms—arts, sciences, politics, and everyday life. Reclaiming Narratives offers a powerful platform to inspire, educate, and uplift the next generation by sharing stories that honour the richness and diversity of Black history.
"Black History Month should serve as a reminder that Black people are not guests in Britain, here for just one month of recognition. We have been integral to the building of this country—fighting in its wars, driving its buses, building the NHS, and shaping its culture through our music, food, fashion, and so much more. Yet, the education system consistently fails to acknowledge these contributions throughout the year, reducing Black history to a mere footnote, when in fact, we are part of the very fabric of Britain" says Cheryl Pheonix, Chief Executive Officer - The Black Child Agenda Advocacy
"Reclaiming our stories isn't just about correcting the past; it’s about demanding the recognition we have always deserved, ensuring that future generations grow up knowing that Black people’s contributions and achievements are woven into the foundation of this nation. This is about ownership of our history, our narrative, and our future. she concludes,
So image empowering the next generation by giving them access to stories that show Black people as trailblazers and innovators. Access to unfiltered versions of our history ensures that our youth don’t grow up with a limited view of what it means to be Black, but instead are proud of a heritage that includes a wide array of accomplishments and contributions. When we reclaim our narratives, we are setting the stage for future generations to build upon a foundation of pride, self-respect, and empowerment.
The stories we tell shape the future. By equipping young minds with a deeper understanding of Black excellence and history, we are fostering leaders who are unafraid to challenge the status quo, question narratives that do not serve them, and take control of their own stories. Education should not just be about facts and dates; it should inspire transformation, foster creativity, and encourage critical thinking. Through Reclaiming Narratives, we can begin this process for the next generation.
Making a Difference
As we celebrate Black History Month 2024, Reclaiming Narratives offers a unique opportunity for each of us to make a lasting difference. It’s about ensuring that our history is told with accuracy, dignity, and respect. Whether you’re attending local events, hosting discussions, or sharing your stories on social media, every contribution shapes a Black History Month that reflects the full breadth of our heritage.
One of the most powerful ways to make a difference is through active participation. Attend the events, engage with the discussions, and contribute your voice to the broader conversation. Too often, people feel that Black History Month is a passive experience—one where they watch from the side-lines. But this year, Reclaiming Narratives encourages everyone to be actively involved. This is not a time to sit back, but a time to stand up and share, teach, and learn.
We each have a part to play. Whether it’s by sharing a piece of family history, organizing an event in your community, or simply educating those around you, every action contributes to the larger goal of reclaiming our narratives. This isn’t just about Black History Month—it’s about ensuring that Black stories are always a part of the conversation, all year long.
