“In our increasingly global and interconnected world, we leaders must recognise and admit what we don’t know… We have to possess enough humility and self-awareness to acknowledge our limitations and biases, then proactively look…to identify and cultivate the best future leaders… The Journey of Leadership is an invaluable resource for leaders at any stage...” —Tjada McKenna, CEO of Mercy Corps
The corporate world is changing rapidly. The traditional, top-down leadership models of the past are no longer enough to navigate the complexities of the modern business environment. With the rise of digital transformation, artificial intelligence (AI), and the growing need for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, today's leaders must evolve, adapt, and embrace a new approach. A leadership makeover isn't just a desire—it's a necessity for anyone aspiring to remain relevant and effective in the fast-paced world of 2024 and beyond.
The concept of leadership transformation is more than just acquiring new skills or keeping up with the latest business trends. It’s about cultivating a mindset that prioritises innovation, emotional intelligence, and authenticity while remaining true to core leadership principles. The journey is personal, and every leader’s path will differ. However, there are several fundamental strategies that all leaders should consider as they prepare themselves and their teams for future success.
The Outdated Leadership Model
Gone are the days when a one-size-fits-all leadership style worked. Command-and-control models, where power is concentrated at the top, no longer serve organisations effectively. Employees today crave leaders who are empathetic, inclusive, and open to new ideas. In fact, some of the most successful leaders are those who create environments that encourage creativity, collaboration, and trust.
If you’re still relying on old-school methods—such as micromanagement, authoritarian decision-making, or rigid organisational structures—you may be unknowingly stifling the very growth and innovation your company needs to thrive. In 2024, leadership requires flexibility, adaptability, and an unwavering commitment to personal and professional development.
Transformational Leadership: Why It’s Critical
In the digital age, leaders are not only tasked with managing people but also navigating disruptive technologies like AI, machine learning, and data analytics. The future of leadership hinges on your ability to leverage these tools to make informed decisions, streamline processes, and create competitive advantages. However, the best technology in the world won’t succeed without people who are motivated, engaged, and empowered. That’s where transformational leadership comes in.
Transformational leadership is about inspiring change—both in yourself and in your organisation. It’s about recognising the need for continuous learning, growth and self-reflection, while also empowering others to achieve their full potential. Leaders today must not only set a vision but also provide the support, tools, and motivation necessary to help their teams succeed.
But how do you ensure that you’re evolving as a leader? And what specific actions can you take to foster growth in both yourself and your team?
The Strategic Path to Leadership Transformation
In The Journey of Leadership book, a key focus is on developing practical, actionable strategies that leaders can implement to reinvent themselves. Here are the top strategic actions to consider as you start your leadership makeover:
1. Evaluating Your Leadership Style Quantitatively
One of the first steps to leadership transformation is understanding where you currently stand. Take a deep dive into your leadership style by collecting quantitative feedback from your team, peers, and even mentors. Tools like 360-degree feedback or leadership assessments can provide you with valuable insights into your strengths, weaknesses, and blind spots.
Are you leading with empathy? Do you provide enough support and autonomy to your team? How do you handle conflict? By gaining a clear understanding of your current leadership approach, you can begin to identify areas for improvement and create a roadmap for your development.
2. Clarifying Your Mandate as a Leader
What is your true role as a leader? Often, leaders become so caught up in daily tasks and putting out fires that they lose sight of their overarching purpose. Take time to reflect on your true mandate as a leader. This isn’t just about hitting quarterly financial targets—it’s about fostering a culture of growth, creativity, and success.
Your mandate may involve inspiring your team, driving innovation, or ensuring organisational sustainability. Once you’ve clarified your purpose, you can align your actions and decisions to support that mandate.
3. Reinvigorating Your Leadership Style
The world is changing, and so should your approach to leadership. Sticking with the same style you’ve always used won’t cut it. Consider adopting new leadership models that focus on inclusion, agility, and empowerment. Try out different approaches, such as servant leadership or adaptive leadership, to see what works best for you and your organisation.
Creativity is also key here. Encourage open dialogue, seek diverse perspectives, and promote a culture where everyone feels valued and heard. This approach will help foster an environment where innovation thrives.
4. Creating a Personal Commitment Plan
It’s easy to talk about change, but putting it into action requires commitment. Create a personal leadership development plan that outlines specific goals, timelines, and measurable outcomes. What are the skills you need to develop? What new approaches will you adopt? How will you measure success?
A commitment plan not only holds you accountable but also demonstrates your dedication to continuous improvement. Share this plan with your team, mentors, or a trusted coach who can provide support and feedback as you implement these changes.
Intergenerational Leadership: Tackling New Challenges
As leaders, we face the complex task of managing multiple generations in the workplace. Baby boomers, Gen X, millennials, and Gen Z each bring unique perspectives, skills, and expectations. To lead effectively across generations, you must develop an inclusive leadership style that values diversity and embraces different viewpoints.
This requires active listening, empathy, and a willingness to adapt your communication style to meet the needs of different team members. By fostering an environment of inclusivity, you’ll not only strengthen your team’s cohesion but also gain a competitive edge by leveraging the strengths of each generation.
In a recent study Women in the Workplace 2024 it states that younger women continue to encounter workplace barriers from the get-go. Women are underrepresented from the start of their careers, making up just 48% of entry-level employees despite holding 59% of bachelor’s degrees.
Soon after, they run up against a “broken rung”: Compared to men, they’re far less likely to get their first promotion to manager. This gender gap has not improved much over time. In 2018, 79 women were promoted to manager for every 100 men. This year, just 81 women were.
And not only that, sexual harassment is a persistent problem. Despite younger women’s much shorter tenures, a third of them have experienced some form of sexual harassment over the course of their careers — the same as older women. Taken together, it’s clear that the workplace is not getting any better for the next generation,
